William C. Akers founded the company in 1963 with $30,000 of capital, ten employees and 20,000 square foot plant in Middletown, OH where the company
specialized in custom shipping containers, wooden pallets and folding cartons with a complete testing laboratory.
From the very beginning, Bill Akers stressed the words . . . customer service. He wanted to offer quick order turnaround, same or next
day delivery and no minimum order quantity. We were in the "JIT" business before the term "JIT" was coined. This absolute focus and dedication to the customer has
been our driving force ever since. That's also the reason "service" is in our company name — as a constant reminder to all our employees that we are here for
one reason — to serve the customer. We have a saying — "The answer is yes; tell us more about the problem (or opportunity)." This is the backbone of our business
model. We feel we are like the 7-Eleven of the industry, we give our customers what they want, when they want it. We are in the service business and our customers
have been able to count on us to deliver within 24 to 72 hours on a consistent basis.
As important as the philosophy
of service to customers has been at Akers Packaging, so has service to the community. From the very beginning, Bill Akers recognized
the importance of building pride in your community by getting involved, and today the Akers family is as committed to those basic concepts as our company's founding
father.
Since then, Akers Packaging has either acquired or started at least 13 paper and packaging related businesses. Today, Akers and its affiliates
operate 10 facilities in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. There are three generations of Akers running the company.
